Chapter One

It was history class. It was the first hour of school today and I felt it was going to be a long day. History was the class I did the worst in. I could never remember the capitals! We had just got brand new desks today and they were so clean I could see my reflection. I saw my blue eyes and my red hair covering them. I had shaggy hair and a round face. I was tanned and I had a lot of freckles. I leaned back in my new seat and groaned. My history teacher, Ms.Rikoni gave me a dirty look. I sat up straight and stared past her at the white wall. "Open your textbook to page ten." I opened the book to the designated page and looked at the picture by the header. It was a picture of Russia in black and white. It was the first week of school and it was already getting on my nerves. Homeworks and tests were stacking up, adding pressure onto my shoulders. My thoughts were trailing off and I heard Ms.Rikoni say, "The posters need to have all the pictures glued on by the end of the hour." I remembered I had left my glue stick in my locker. I went up to Ms.Rikoni and asked, "Can I go to my locker and get my glue stick." She nodded and walked to her desk to write me a pass. I took the pass off her desk and walked out the door. I sighed realizing I had no idea what I was supposed to glue to the poster. I did not even know which poster she was talking about. I wan't paying attention. I walked along the tiled filled floors and knew I would have to ask my friend, Zack, what we were supposed to do. I walked by room twelve to see my girlfriend, Casey, not paying attention. We had alot in common. She had long red hair and she also was tanned and had freckles. We were the same height. I walked by the office and it seemed empty. That was odd. I walked by the entrance of the school and saw cars lined up in the parking lot. I looked both ways and ran down the hallway to my locker. I stopped and was about to do my combination when I felt a hand on my shoulder.

Chapter Two

I spun around, axious to see how petrifying this would be. I did not know what to expect or rather who to expect. I came face to face with the principal. "Hello!" I exclaimed, a little to loud. "Do you have a pass?" She asked. The principals name was Ms.Bolu. I pulled out my pass and showed it to her. She nodded and I put it back into my pocket. I opened my locker ang grabbed my glue stick. Before heading back to my classroom I decided to go to the bathroom. The downside was it was in the back of the school.

I was washing my hands in the bathroom and looked at my reflection. The teacher was probably going to ask me why I took so long. Ms.Rikoni was not a teacher that was good at keeping her temper. Suddenly I heard a ring. It was coming from my pocket. I grabbed my cell phone and saw the screen. I had a text message from Casey. I read it and it said, Meet me in the gym. I did not know how much longer I could stay out of the classroom. Ms.Rikoni was bound to ask me for a reason. I decided I would be able to think of a reason and if I rushed I would make it in time. I got another text message from Casey. It read, I told the teacher I went to the bathroom so I don't have much time. That was perfect because I didn't have much time either. I ran down to the gym, making sure no teacher spotted me as I passed the doors. I opened the gym doors and they closed behind me. The gym was a room with no windows, no exits, just an entrance and a boys and girls locker room. The wooden floor looked clean and I heard a voice behind me. "Hey Joey!" I spun around and saw Casey. She opened her mouth but instead a loud alarm went off. It wasn't my cell phone. Something came over the speakers, "This is not a drill, exit the building. We have a fire!" Casey followed me as I ran to the doors I had entered the gym through. I grabbed the handle and pulled. It did not budge. I decided I probably had to push so I pushed against the door. It did not move. I was locked inside the gym during a fire.

Chapter Three

I was in pure shock. The announcement over the speaker made it clear that there was a fire in the school and it was not a drill. I was not moving. I knew this had to be a dream. Something had to be going on. Was I getting pranked. I scowled myself for thinking that I was getting pranked. They could not have gotten the entire school in on this. I questioned if this could be a dream. I remembered waking up this morning and feeling tired. I remembered taking a shower and walking to the bus stop. I felt the pencil in my hand as I wrote down my name on the work sheet in my history class. This couldn't be a dream. I was now petrified. How could something like this happen to me. I kept in mind that a teacher could walk by and see us. I then realized that they would all be heading near the exit and there was no exit close to the gym. Who ever built this school never considered a fire during gym class. I franticly looked for another way out but I couldn't see any. "We're trapped!" I shouted. Cassey was staring at the door, in disbelief, not saying a word. I grabbed a hold of her arm and bolted across the shining wooden floors of the gym to the boys locker room. She was about to protest but then, by the look on my face, knew this was not a matter of going into the others genders locker room. This was a matter of saving our lives. I smelled the air and caught a faint smell of smoke. It was getting closer. From what I have learned in science class, fire travels fast. I slammed myself against the boys locker room door and it opened. I saw the office, the lockers and the shower. Towels were scattered around the ground and on top of the blue, rusted metal lockers. I couldn't find any window or exit other then the door leading to the school pool. "Do you know another exit?" I asked, in panic mode. She had a grim look on her face. "Do you?" I shouted at her, losing my temper. I couldn't help it. I was not good with this pressure. I could die here. Our lives were at stake. She shook her head. Was this the end for us?

Chapter Four

I ran out of the boys lockers room and bolted into the girls room. "There has to be a way out!" I said out loud, not caring if Cassey was in the room or not. I ran into the gym teachers office in the girls locker room and looked for a key to the gym doors. I fumbled through papers and I accidently knocked one to the floor. The papper read, September 18th. That was today! I looked and saw the year and realized this was a newspaper of twenty years ago, today. I was shocked in horror as I saw the main article. It had a picture of our school, The Arthunia Academy, in flames. I read the articles name out load, "Arthunia Academy is set to flames. The mysterious person who caused this had escaped and was never caught. The paper fell from my hands and landed on the ground. Could the person who caused that fire be the cause of this horrible event? Could this person be the cause of my death? I shook the thought out of my head and continued to fumble through the papers. I found a water bottle and nothing else. I looked at the door leading to the pool and gained some hope. I ran into the school pool, turned the corner and tripped. I tripped and fell into the school pool, head first. Water rushed down my throat and filled my lungs. I pushed myself above the water and coughed water out. I climbed out of the pool. I searched around and couldn't find a window or an exit. Cassey walked into the room, face covered with tears. "What?" I asked her, growing impatient. "The fire is in the gym!" She shouted at me.

Chapter Five

My lower lip started to tremble. Cassie had a ghostly look on her face. I felt the temperature rising. A siren went off and I assummed it was the fire alarm. I started to sweat and realized the pressure was on. Some smoke came into the hallway I was in. I ran to the end of the hallway, so I could see inside the gym and my eyes stared in shock at the sight. Near the gym door, and quickly spreading, was a flaming, roaring scene. There was a fire and it looked haunting and evil. It was spreading out and looming up the walls. The reflection of the terror stood in my eyes and I wondered how I could get out of this. History class did not seem that bad right now. My jaw dropped and I could not even utter a scream. I took a step forward and felt heat surround me. How could I get out of this? I was holding back the tears. I wanted to be anywhere but here. The fire was rapidly growing and it was getting closer. The door was flaming and I couldn't think of a way out. Cassie tapped me on my shoulder and had a fire extinguisher in her hands. I looked behind her to see the open latch which was holding it. Why didn't I think of that? I grabbed it from her and walked up to the flames. The heat was stinging my face. I saw sparks fly around and my fear grew. I pressed the nozzle on the extinguisher and the chemicals sprayed out and pushed against the fire in front of me. The push was such a shock it sent me a few centimeters back. I pressed the nozzle harder and the chemicals shot out more forceful. It made small exit just enough for me to get out the door. Cassie rushed after me and a piece of wood on top of the door, flaming, fell and hit the back of her foot, almost hitting her back. She fell to the ground and grabbed her foot in pain.

Chapter Six

I gasped and ran towards her. I put out my hand, sugguesting she grabbed it. Cassie let go of her foot and grabbed my hand. The heat in the room was building up as I felt the fire loom closer. My eyes started to sting from getting so close to the heat. The dark smoke was filling the halls. I pulled her up to her feet and it took Cassie a minute to regain her strength and stand up. We ran down the halls, now blinded by smoke. I screamed, hoping that anyone would hear us. Where were the firefighters? I could barely breath in the smoke and I assummed Cassie had the same problem. My feet started to pick up the pace as they thudded against the granite tiled hallways. I couldn't see the wall, or much less two feet in front of me, in the smoke. My lungs started to fill with smoke and my eyes seemed to beg from me to close them. I felt weight pulling me down and I felt like I was going to collapse. I couldn't breath. I felt light headed and out of control. I could not tell where I was going, I just ran. I turned the hallway, and saw the principals office. It was flaming and the entire area around it was in flames. The exit to the school was in flames. Thats why there were no fire fighters here yet, the door was in flames. They would have to open a window or use the back door to the school. But the back door was on the other end of the school and I was not sure if I could make it. I felt the pressure push against me. Sweat was rolling down my face. I turned around and dropped my jaw in shock. I couldn't find Cassie. "Cassie?" I shouted out, not sure where to yell to. I waited for a response but heard nothing. I started to worry. Would it be to late to save Cassie? Would I be able to make it out in time if I went back to look for her? I heard a scream in the distance. It was coming from near the music room. I had no time to spare if I wanted to get out of here. I bolted as fast as I could in the direction I had heard the scream. The smoke was getting worse and I had a hard time even finding my way down the hallway. I could not make out anything around me, and I was completely lost. Where was the music room? I heard another scream in the distance, this time louder. I ran into that direction and felt pain smash against my forehead. I had ran into something. I fell backwards onto my back. Pain started to swell through me. I grabbed my forehead and groaned. It was stinging and I did not know how much longer I could handle this. I pulled myself to my feet and heard another shriek, and this time, more carefully I ran into the direction I predicted it was coming from. I could make out a door in front of me and I grabbed the knob. I tugged but the door didn't open. I looked through the window and saw a room, with not much smoke and a girls face looking back at me. "Help! I'm locked in the room!" she shouted at me. I didn't know what to do. I started to feel even more light headed. It was getting harder to see, harder to breath and harder to survive.
