- Introduction -
Hi. I'm Tyler Phillips. I'm 15 years old, and I'm kind of new to the concept of putting a whole summer down on paper, so bear with me here. When my teacher came up to me and asked me to write down everything that happened the summer Alex died, I just kind of stood there with a blank look on my face. How was I supposed to write all that down? After all, everybody already knew what happened, or atleast I thought they did. But, when you've got a teacher with a lazy eye and a cane, you'll do anything to get away.
So here I am, writing down the summer that changed my life forever.

Chapter 1
It was May 28th, 2007. I had just gotten out of school, and was dreading Summer break. Most kids couldn't wait to get out of school and have some fun, but what was I going to do for 3 months? I didn't have many friends, and my parents didn't have the time or money for a vacation. All I could do was sit on the beach and watch the waves.
Anyway, I got on the bus and rode home. When I went in my house, I found a note on the counter.

Tyler, I won't be home tonight until late because I'm working the late shift. I called your father and he said he'll be home sometime next week. He promises. There's some leftover meatloaf in the fridge.

Ofcourse my mother was working the late shift. My father was probably never going to come home from California, and we needed the extra cash since he wasn't sending money. LEFTOVER MEATLOAF! As if regular meatloaf wasn't bad enough, I had to have leftover meatloaf. My stomach wasn't very excited, so I decided to take a walk. I walked all the way to the pier and sat down at my favorite bench. I was watching some early tourists walk by when a boy walked up to me. That boy was Alex.

Chapter 2

As Alex was walking toward me, the only words that went through my mind were "OH NO." I thought it was going to be one of those idiots from school that wanted to beat me up again or toss me over the pier. But as Alex's face came into view, I realized I had never seen him before. I thought to myself, "Maybe he's a tourist." But then I saw his clothes. This person who would soon become known as Alex was wearing a tuxedo.

It wasn't like I had never seen nice clothes before. Most families on Seabrook Island are crazy rich anyway. But a tuxedo? On a beach? Maybe he was here for a wedding? But as I looked at Alex coming over, I just hoped I could make a friend. Maybe he'd be that best friend I'd been praying about for a long time. I thought that maybe, just maybe, something good could happen that day. I remember meeting Alex like it was yesterday...

"Hi, I'm Alex Cartright," Alex said. "I just moved in today and I'm looking around for kids my age." Tyler just stared at Alex for a moment thanking god he wasn't going to go home with a black eye or be soaking wet. "Uh Hi. I'm Tyler Phillips. What's with the tux?" Tyler said. Tyler was looking at him very strangely, and Alex was starting to notice. "Oh, my parents wanted me to make a good first impression," Alex said. "Oh, thats... interesting," said Tyler.

"Listen, I know this is really sudden, and you hardly know me, but my mom told me to invite somebody over for dinner tonight. Would you like to come?" Alex said. "Sure! That would be great!" Tyler said. "Where do you live and when do you want me to come?"

"I live on Night Heron Circle, and how about you come right now? We could hang out until dinner." Tyler felt very unsure about going to a strangers house, but it was either meatloaf or something else, and Tyler was willing to take the risk. "Let's go," said Tyler."

Chapter 3

"I've never heard of Night Heron Circle," said Tyler and he and Alex walked up the boardwalk.
"Oh, it's in that new neighborhood on the east side of the island," Alex said.
"Whoah! That's 12 miles away! We're going to walk there?"
"No way. We're taking the limo."
"What limo?"
"That limo," answered Alex and he and Tyler stepped off the boardwalk to stare at the massive white hummer limo parked before them.
"You cannot... get good gas mileage with this thing," said Tyler.
"Tell me about it," said Alex as he and Tyler climbed into the limo.
"What school do you go to?" asked Alex as the driver started the car and it rolled away.
"Oh, I got to Seabrook High, and it just got out today."
"That's where I'm supposed to go too!"
"Oh cool," said Tyler.
"So, where do you live?" asked Alex.
"I live... at... that other gated community on the west side of the island," Tyler lied.
"Awesome."

"We're here!" exclaimed Alex as he and Tyler climbed of the limo.

Tyler stood there in awe as he gazed at the huge 3 story mansion complete with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, private driving range, and arcade.

"So this is how the other half lives," Tyler whispered to himslef as he and Alex walked toward the front door."
"What was that?" asked Alex."
"Oh nothing," said Tyler.

Chapter 4

Tyler met Alex's parents as soon as they got inside. Like Tyler, Alex was an only child. After talking to Alex's parents Tyler and Alex went swimming and talked about their hobbies. Tyler began to feel guilty about his lie about where he lived.

"So Tyler, I want to see your house soon. It sounds awesome."
"Alex, I have to be honest. I don't live in a big house like you. I just wanted you to think I did because I didn't want you to know I was poor."
"I don't care about how much money you have. You don't have to lie. I know I have a lot of stuff, but money isn't everything. Friends like you are more valuable."
"Thanks Alex."
"Tyler, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
"You want to sleep over tonight?"
"Oh no! I completely forgot about my mom! She had to work late tonight and I didn't tell her I was going to a friend's house! Let me go call her!"

Mrs. Phillips picked up the phone after the first ring.
"Hello?"
"Hi mom. It's Tyler."
"Tyler! You had me worried sick! It's 11 pm! Where are you?'
"I met this new kid who just moved here. He's invited me over, and he's really nice. I really think I made a good friend here mom. He asked if I could spend the night."
"Tyler, I don't even know him or his parents!"
"I'll go get his mom so you can talk to her."

Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Cartright talked on the phone, and sorted everything out. Tyler walked back outside to Alex.

"So? Can you stay?"
"I can stay."
