Dont you think its kinda ugly. No disrespect to the VETERANS-god bless them.

What does a flower have to do with this day though lol

It's not disrespectful to wonder at the choice in pin design. The flower is a poppy, and it has been used to symbolize the sacrifices of the troops in World War I. What's even better is that other countries use the Poppy in the same context, so it's not "just an American thing".

I found this article on Wikipedia about it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day). I think it will help you understand the history behind this day of remembrance, and how the poppy fits into it all. :)

It's a poppy.

There's a poem called "In Flander's Field"

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

If you look up "In Flander's Field"
You'll find A LOT of information on it :)

*sniff* That poem is so sad - it always make me cry... But it does hit down to the root of why the poppy is now the symbol of Veterans Day. Because the poppies bloomed in such abundance in the fields of France, where many WWI soldiers are buried, it just kinda fit. I'm not sure it's really something that can be explained - it just happened. I didn't really understand the whole significance until I studied WWI in depth. After that, it was just kind of intuitive.
